The Heeren Palm Suites is a beautiful boutique hotel housed in two tastefully restored adjoining Peranakan townhouses within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Melaka. The intricate architecture with its interesting mix of Dutch style, Peranakan flair, and colonial influences, echoes the rich history of the property and tells the story of the bygone days of Melaka. Built between the early-1800s and the mid-1900s, these distinctive heritage buildings continue to be an important part of the cityscape. Guests from all over the world can now experience a piece of history while indulging in the finer luxuries of modern living and enjoy a meaningful stay in Melaka filled with warm memories.
Much of the antique marble, still beautiful though faded with an aged patina, has been meticulously reconditioned in many areas of the Hotel. The vividly colored Peranakan wall moldings and plaster renderings in the Hotel’s front façade have been painstakingly restored. The timber ceiling beams have also been sympathetically refurbished and the walls painted thoroughly with ground seashell calcium paint which allows the walls to breathe.
Each of the Hotel’s 10 elegant rooms is uniquely decorated in a contemporary theme and feature beautiful ensuite Italian marble bathrooms with sensuous rain showers. the Location
With its convenient location on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, or Heeren Street as it is more commonly known as Melaka’s rich history starts right at the doorstep of Heeren Palm Suites. Though less bustling than nearby Jonker Street, Heeren Street has arguably more old-world charm and boasts amazing sights and interesting stories.
Initially called Heeren Street, this narrow street was renamed Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock after its namesake passed away on Dec 13, 1960, to recognize the patriot’s contributions to Malaysia. It was once the choice neighborhood for prosperous Straits-born Chinese in the mid-19th and early 20th century.
As with most houses on Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Heeren Palm Suites is narrow yet long on the inside. This is because during Dutch rule, property taxes were based on the width of each house, instead of the total area. Other characteristic features include ornately decorated façades, open courtyards to provide ventilation and light, and small wells to draw water.
A short walk from the hotel will take you to the busy street of Jonker Walk which is flanked on both sides of the road with heritage houses dating back to the 17th century. From there, learn more about the history of Melaka with a visit to the nearby places of interests such as the Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Dutch Square, Christ Church Melaka, and The Stadthuys.
